Sunday 31 March
As like the Roy Orberson song, we drove all night from Pheonix
to Memphis. Its usually a 2 day drive but with Tim and Chris
at the wheel we did it in 22 hrs. Stamina of the gods those 2. I
tried to do my best by staying awake with each driver whilst the
other one slept, but I finally collapsed around 4am. So, no change
there. Along with the other big drive - Minneapolis to Missoula
you realise that its on these journeys that you get
a true idea of the enormity of this country. Just vast expanses
of nothing sometimes. I dont know why its so hard to
get a green card, its not like theyre running out of
space.
Arizona was arrid and hot with thousands upon thousands of cacti
dotting the landscape. Sometimes taking on the appearance of gnarled
old men whove been strung out in the middle of nowhere to
be crucified.
Dusk brought with it New Mexico with the sun setting behind us
as we ploughed on heading for Arkansas. In equal proportion to the
landscape, the night exposes the never ending quilt of stars and
a Moon so close and clear that you could almost touch it.
Sunrise came as we neared the border to Tennessee, crossing the
Mississippi once again as we entered the City of Memphis.
